In Memory of Clayton "Clay" Light

Class of 1966
Lee-Davis High School

        Richmond Times Dispatch

LIGHT, Clayton "Clay" Henry Jr., of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2014. Clay's biggest joy in life was sharing the love of his four daughters, Ann (Doug), Carrington, Whitney (Paul) and Cate (Allan) and only son, Clayton "Tripp" Henry Light III (deceased), with his wife, Jan Ashby. The happiness in his heart grew when his grandchildren, Tripp, Grace, Elsa and Zen, were born. Clay is survived by his loving mother, Lucy Ann Light; and siblings, Ronnie (Donna), Steve "Weeba", Jo Jo and Karen Lahocki (John); along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Henry Light Sr. Born on October 2, 1947, Clay was an Army veteran who proudly served in Vietnam and other areas around the world. In 2011, Clay and his daughters traveled back to Heidelberg, Germany, where he was stationed for 13 months during his service to his country. Reflecting on the trip, Clay said, "I had the time of my life." An alumnus of Lee-Davis High School and Virginia Commonwealth University, Clay shared his love of sports with his daughters by taking them to VCU basketball games early on. He was thrilled about VCU's recent success in the NCAA tournament. He was also an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and Hanover Hawks with his star nephew, Kevin, on the pitcher's mound. Clay loved Hanover County and his volunteer work was neverending. He was an honorary deputy of the Sheriff's Office, long-time member of Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers, where he represented Hanover County as a board member, graduate of and top advocate for Citizen's Police Academy, loyal participant of Citizen's Courtesy Patrol and devoted member of the Hanover Businessmen's Association and the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club. Clay simply loved being a part of and giving back to his community. A homebuilder by trade, Clay's superior craftsmanship can be seen all over Hanover. Clay had a reputation as a perfectionist and everyone could attest to his beautiful work. Clay's family wishes to express gratitude to the loyal team he worked with over his 50 year career. Clay's family would also like to thank his closest friends for their constant love and support, his OOGH and poker buddies, Chuck and Martha, Nancy, Neil, Ernie, Sheila and Kenny, Stuart, Dave, Rudy, Tommy, the Hanover County Sheriff's Department officers, staff and everyone who touched his heart throughout his life. If it so moves you, work a crossword puzzle, make a Nilla Wafer sandwich with peanut butter and toast to Clay's legacy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please join the family in celebrating Clay's life at Bennett's Funeral Home, Mechanicsville Chapel, located at 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 and a memorial service 11 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2014. In lieu of flowers, Clay's family requests memorial contributions be made to Hanover County Sheriff's Office Foundation or VCU's Ram Athletic Fund.
